In 2009 Connecticut Magazine ranked Fairfield #1 of 19 Cities in Connecticut over 50,000 populations, and #2 in its 2011 edition.  In all a great report card for this scenic coastal community with a sharp town streetscape, housing that ranges from wonderful contemporary cottages and beach houses, traditional and antique colonial homes.  Both magazines measure the quality of life with a look at educational performance, local economy and cultural richness.  No wonder luminaries such as Leonard Bernstein, Hume Crone, Keir Dullea, Don Imus, John Mayer, Joe Namath, Jason Robards, Gene Tierney, Michael Weatherly, and Justin Long choose Fairfield.

Areas of Fairfield include:  its Center, Greenfield Hill historic district (with a yearly Dogwood Tree Festival), Sasco, Southport with its historic district, Stratfield and Tunxis Hill; there is the Beach area, two villages (Knapp’s and Melville Villages and Holland Hill.  Fairfield hosts two universities Sacred Heart University (the 2nd largest Catholic University in the Northeast with a Master’s program named for John “Jack” Welch former head of Fairfield’s largest company, General Electric) and  Fairfield University with its Regina A. Quick Center of Performing Arts that offers an excellent year round program of events from classical to pop. There is also a resident Shakespeare group, and a Black Box theater.  Fairfield’s Gazebo holds band concerts in the summer providing year-round entertainment in this culturally connected town.

Fairfield was once a summer community. It is 50.5-mile ride by car from New York city along either the Merritt Parkway or I-95 or75 minute train trip.  The town’s five beaches, marinas, boat launches, nature preserves and lakes, Bird Sanctuaries and hiking trails provide recreation to Fairfield residents.

The award-winning school system is a consistent draw between academics, arts and athletics. Forty percent of High School students take AP courses with 78% passing.  Eighty-nine percent of Fairfield students go onto college and its students routinely gain acceptance to the most selective of institutions.  In addition, several private schools provide choice to the Fairfield residents.
