    Norwalk has always been known for its maritime tradition and specifically oyster harvesting. Every September the Oyster Festival continues to celebrate this tradition along the shore in South Norwalk. The SOHO art festival is held in the historic South Norwalk district.  For 88 years, Norwalk has been the host of the Round Hill Highland Games celebrating all things Scottish with food, games and many bagpipe players and kilts.

    Norwalk is now a major corporate headquarters with such companies as Xerox, Diageo, Applera (former Perkin Elmer), Emcor, Kayak, Priceline, Northrop Grumman, Emcor Group, P and Dooney & Burke.  Homegrown Stew Leonard’s started his unique, nationally known successful dairy store in Norwalk.  In South Norwalk, manufacturing buildings have been repurposed for housing and commercial use, and created a vibrant historical district.

    Baseball has a strong tradition in Norwalk, with a 1951 World Series win for the Little Leaguers in 1952 and a Babe Ruth win in 2008.  Even the American Senior Legion Team gets into the act with a win for Connecticut.  The coastline and river access provides all water sports, and a strong crew tradition in Norwalk.

    Housing has a wide range in Norwalk. Highlights are: Wilson Point, a private association along the coast; Rowayton, formerly a summer community.  Its bungalows have been replaced with a tremendous number of newly built homes on “zero lots”; and Silvermine a bit further inland and still showing its roots of a vibrant artist community.

    Norwalk has two high schools, both with strong sports programs. Both schools offer Lacrosse. The award winning Norwalk High School Marching Bears have performed in the Orange Bowl, Disneyland and Brian McMahon High School’s Center for Global Studies is a magnet program for Fairfield County students to learn Arabic, Japanese and Chinese language and culture.  They have been football state champions (1994), Boys and Girls Lacrosse has won both Division I and Division II runner up (2000/2007) Baseball teams FCIAC Champions in 1998 and 2006.  The Columbus Elementary School is a Bank Street model with a young Astronauts program.

    There is a strong boating tradition in Norwalk with many marinas.  People enjoy windsurfing, kayaking and rowing.
